Part of your Page content type form is a complex tool called the Layout Canvas.
The Layout canvas is a dragand drag and drop interface for structuring layouts. You can use it for creating layouts for predefined Components.
Components are mini templates with custom edit forms. They can be added and combined on the Layout canvas Canvas to create new layouts. Editors can use them to create pages where the content and layout requirements don’t fit within a fixed template structure.
Earlier, in Exercise 1.4.3, we clicked through a Page to see the layout canvas interface where you have access to Components. There are many different types of Components available for you to build your pages. Some types of Components include things like Banners, Social Media feeds, Cards, Sliders, and Video, as well as Content like FAQs, Events, Bios, and News Items.
In addition to Components, your Layout Canvas includes Helpers. Helpers are saved Components or groups of Components on your Layout canvas to be used again quickly without having to rebuild them. You can think of helpers as an advanced copy and paste function. When you save an element as a Helper, it includes any child elements. Content Editors can not save new Helpers.
The list of available Components and Helpers will likely be continually refined, but right now you can see them when you add or edit a Page content type. We’ll get experience with that in the next exercise.
