Adding Media to the Media Library
Adding Media to the Media Library
Summary: The Media Library holds all of the files and external content you add to the site to enrich the visitor experience.
Your website offers additional content flexibility by allowing you to add many kinds of Media to the Media Library for reuse.
Like all data collection tools in Drupal, adding Media is as simple as filling out a form. Let’s inspect the available options.
Exercise: Adding Media to the Library
- Click Manage >> Content >> Media. This is where a list of all Media on your site appears. Under the Media tab, you can select whether to view all media in a Grid or Table list. Observe that the table provides a bit more detail about each item.
- You can add new Media by clicking the blue+Add media button.
- Observe there are three media types available. TIP: To get directly to this page you can go to the path /media/add
- Skim through the descriptions for an idea of what types are available for you to add. You will only see the Media bundles you have permission to create. Currently, you have all of the site’s Media bundles available to your user role.
Exercise: Adding a YouTube Video
One type of Media you may need to add to the site is a Video. You can easily embed videos into your Media Library with just a URL link.
To add a new video to your Media Library:
- If you are not already on the Add media item page, get there by navigating to Manage >>Content >> Media >> +Add media
- When you see the list of Media types, choose Video
- The Add Video form will open. In the Name field, add your last name followed by the word Video.
- For a Remote video URL, visit the Emory YouTube channel and choose a video you’d like to embed - or use this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_3bXoNc9S4
Copy and paste the link into the Remote video URL field on the Add Video form. - You can tag the video by selecting a term from the Categories list (not populated at the time of the training), or typing in new tags in the Tags text box.
NOTE: You’ll want to be VERY careful here. Adding a tag is very easy, but creating duplicate tags (just slightly different from another one) or mis-spellings of keywords is a recipe for long term disaster. - Scroll to the bottom and click Save. You will now see your YouTube Video in the Media library. We will utilize these videos in an upcoming exercise.
Exercise: Adding an Image
Another type of Media you may need to add to the site is an Image.
To add a new image to your Media Library:
- If you are not already on the Add media item page, get there by navigating to Manage >>Content >> Media >> +Add media.
- Select Image.
- Provide a meaningful Title (suggestion: your library-section-image description. example: rose-fellowship-garvey)
- Click Choose File and upload an image of yourself (or some other image from your computer).
- In the middle of the image is a cross-hair. Move that to where you think the“scale and crop” would best work.
- Add Alternative Text.
- Typically, you would select a Category and add Tags. In the tags field, enter the letter “a” and select a Tag. If the Tag you’re looking for isn’t there, type the entire word.
- Click Save, then click on the image you just created to view the information. The tag(s) you selected will have numbers after them. These are just the“term ID” which you can ignore.
